Shelter Campaign on Homelessness- Mike Hall MP speaks out
Mike Hall MP said:-
“10 years ago the incoming Labour Government made a pledge to reduce the number of people who were sleeping rough.
“Over the past 10 years great progress has been made. The Rough Sleepers Unit, the extra investment in hostels and support services have all been warmly welcomed and assisted in dramatically reducing the number of rough sleepers and homeless people.
“Shelter has now conducted a wide ranging consultation exercise with street homeless people to find out what further help they need. The result of this consultation shows that people are still becoming homeless, they have problems accessing hostel space, and there is a lack of move-on accommodation particularly for those with mental health problems or drug/alcohol dependency.
“Shelter is now calling for a reduction in rough sleepers to as near to zero as possible and for conditions in hostels to be more bearable for homeless people.
“I fully support the Shelter Campaign to further reduce the number of rough sleepers on our streets and the number of homeless people. I have made representations to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.”
