Martyn Jones MP: “I Welcome Free Passports For The Greatest Generation”
MARTYN JONES MP has welcomed the news that Clwyd South pensioners who served Britain in the struggle against the Nazi’s will from this week receive free passports for the rest of their lives as a thank-you for the struggle they endured. The passports will also help veterans and their families visit battlegrounds and war cemeteries in the run up to the 60th anniversary of VE day.
The plan means that all those who helped serve our nation in World War II will be able to apply for a free passport – while those who got a new passport to play a part in the 60th anniversary of D-day will be eligible for a full refund.
Currently, veterans are eligible for a free one year passport, but partners and those who served at home weren’t able to apply. This new plan recognises the service of all. Also, the allocation of the free ten-year passport for all ensures that veterans will be able to make further visits in future years.
MARTYN JONES backed free passports for veterans in Parliament.
Commenting MARTYN JONES MP said:
“The courage and sacrifice of those who fought and worked during the World War II must never be forgotten. Their efforts changed the course of history and liberated Europe from Nazi oppression and the secured the East from Japanese aggression.
“I am very pleased that David Blunkett has agreed with me that those in our society who served Britain so well should be entitled a free passport as a mark of the gratitude the nation owes them for their sacrifices during those years.
“After the success of the free passports for veterans programme for the D-Day landings, I think a free passport is one way we can show our gratitude to those who gave so much for our freedom and security. I strongly supported the proposal and am especially pleased the government has backed calls for a refund for those who applied for a passport over the last six months.
“That’s why I’ve supported extra winter fuel payments for the over 75’s, so that no-one should be forced to shiver through winter. That’s why I‘ve backed free TV licences for over 75’s. Most importantly, I’ve argued that no-one over 75 should ever have to live in poverty, so I’ve called for a minimum income for every senior citizen.
”I want to make sure every senior citizen in Clwyd South claims all they are entitled to. If you are not sure you are getting any of these benefits, please get in touch with my constituency office on 01978 845938, I’ll be in happy to help you claim what’s yours”
