Bank Holiday Workers Deserve Extra Time Off Says MP

Martyn Jones, MP for Clwyd South wants to see a third term Labour government give over 100,000 Welsh people extra days off.

Currently there is a policy problem regarding bank holiday workers and too few paid days of leave.  Over two million British workers are working on bank holidays but not receiving additional days off.

This means that some of the lowest paid workers are only receiving twelve of the twenty days of paid leave per year.  While many people enjoyed two bank holidays over the Easter break, many others did not and will not receive compensation for those days of work.

Shop keepers, bar and restaurant staff, transportation minders, and hospital staff were among those people who worked over the bank holidays without compensation.  Many who did take the bank holiday days off did so as a part of their annual holiday leave, which means they are losing over a week and a half of their holiday time.

In response to this problem, a third term Labour government wants to ensure that every full-time worker will receive twenty-eight days paid holiday, which will include the days for bank holidays.

Commenting on the issue, Mr. Jones said:

“Labour has pledged to support hard working people and their families, and ensuring that full-time workers are receiving the paid leave that they are entitled to is an important part of upholding that pledge.  I want to see bank holiday workers receive the time off that they deserve.”
