Martyn Jones
MP Lays Out Truth About Crime
Martyn Jones MP for Clwyd South has the statistics to prove the crime is down.
In the midst of Conservative claims that violent crimes have increased, Mr. Jones reassures that the statistics prove otherwise.
The Government reports that overall crime is down by 30% and that all violence is down by 26%.
The chance of becoming victim to a crime is at the lowest level since 1981 and the chance of falling victim to violent crime is one-fifth lower than in 1997, a decrease of some 380,000 people.
Commenting on the claim that violent crime has increased, Mr. Jones said:
“Accusation that violent crime is on the rise is misleading and has much to do with the way in which violent crime is recorded; for instance, the increased reporting of Domestic Violence slants the facts so that it appears violence is increasing, when in actuallity it has been there all along, but in the past was ignored.”
Thus far, the Government has banned all handguns, raised the age limit for owning an air gun, and issued a five year minimum sentence for violators of the law.
Measures to increase powers to search for knives have been implemented, and well as the sale of dangerous knives has been restricted.
To further reduce crime, the Domestic Violence Crime and Victims Act proposes to make common assault an arrestable offence, criminalise the breach of a non-molestation order, and extend the availability of restraining orders to all violent offenses.
Mr. Jones said:
“The Government has taken serious action to reduce violent crime, and it has paid off, but by no means is a 30% crime reduction acceptable. There is more that will be done to futher reduce crime.”
