Martyn Jones MP: "I'm Backing Tough Measures On Crime"
Martyn Jones MP backs new plans to fight organised crime, drugs and terrorismAs the Government announced proposals to take action on Crime in the Queen’s Speech today, MARTYN JONES MP welcomed plans to tackle drugs, organised crime and terrorism.
MARTYN JONES MP said:
"I know that people here in Clwyd South want the government to tackle the problems of crime, terrorism, illegal immigration, drugs and anti-social behaviour. I’m delighted that the government has put these serious issues at the heart of their plans for this year.
“The new proposals mean we will be able to protect against terrorism and help to secure our borders and prevent illegal working by those who are not entitled to be here through the introduction of an ID card.
“I’m also backing the creation of a serious crime agency – a dedicated FBI style agency to focus on the criminals who carry out major crimes like drugs smuggling, people trafficking, prostitution and extortion. Too often these people are able to get away without punishment for the harm they do. This must change.
“I’ll support proposals to give new powers to the police to tackle drug abuse- for example by allowing them to test for drug abuse from frequent offenders – and force them to get treatment for their addiction – or face jail.
“Since Labour came into government, We’ve increased police numbers - by the end of last year there were 138,000 police officers - 11,000 more than in 1997. Here in North Wales there are 1601 police officers – 62 more than in 2002.
“We’re recruiting more police. Now we need to give them the tools they need to fight crime.
“Fighting crime is a top priority for people here in Clwyd South. I’ll be making sure it’s the government’s prioirity too.”
