MP Praises New Scheme To Empower Local Residents Against Drunken Behaviour
Martyn Jones MP for Clwyd South welcomes new clampdown on late night alcohol-fuelled violence
Tough new powers which could see the closure of kebab shops, burger bars and other takeaway outlets if they attract alcohol-fuelled violence or rowdy behaviour have been welcomed by Martyn Jones MP as a step in the right direction.
Next month, under the modernisation of licensing laws all pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels will be brought under one simple system and this includes late night takeaways, which will have to be licensed – even if they don't sell alcohol.
For the first time, local residents and businesses will have a say in how late takeaways can stay open. Mr. Jones believes this to be a fantastic scheme that offers residents the powers that they deserve - to ensure they live their lives in a fair amount of peace and limited disruption.
Takeaways which attract rowdy and anti-social behaviour will also be subject to tough new powers which will enable police officers to shut them down for up to 24 hours if they are causing a disruption to the local residents.
“Late night takeaways are inevitably a magnet for violence and anti-social behaviour especially after pub or club closing time when revellers are in search of a kebab or burger,” said Mr Jones.
“These new powers will allow local residents to have their say - unlike before - these late-night, crowd-pulling takeaways will only be erected with complete regard for the people who have to live there. This is certainly a fair scheme.
“So, if you’re kept awake at night by drunken louts flocking around a kebab shop in your neighbourhood, you can at last do something about it.”
