Local MP urges Local veterans not to miss out on heroes return help
Clwyd South MP, MARTYN JONES has urged local World War II veterans not to miss out on the Government's £10 million Lottery-funded scheme to enable them to return to the areas where they saw active service during the war.
The scheme will apply to all Second World War veterans resident in the UK wherever they served - including North Africa, the Middle East and Burma, as well as Europe. The Heroes Return scheme was first announced by Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State with responsibility for the National Lottery, at Labour Party Conference 2003.
Commenting on the scheme, MARTYN JONES MP said:
"The Heroes Return scheme is a fitting tribute to the courage and sacrifice of local veterans. Grants are available to fund travel costs for veterans resident in the UK and their carers to visit the countries where they served. Veterans who would like to participate should telephone the Veterans Agency free on 0800 169 2277 for information and advice.
"I am delighted that the Government and the National Lottery have been able to establish the Heroes Return Fund to mark 60th anniversary of the events that led to the end of the Second World War, and I would urge local veterans to make the most of the scheme, which will be complemented by a range of commemorations within the UK. It is particularly important for any veterans who want to apply for support to travel to northern France for the commemoration of the Normandy Landings to telephone the Veterans Agency as soon as possible."
