MP’s Delight Over Quarry Landfill Decision
Clwyd South MP, MARTYN JONES today hailed a “great victory for local residents” following a High Court decision in London, to overturn a Planning Inspector’s decision to allow a landfill works at Hafod Quarry in Johnstown, near Wrexham.
The High Court action was initiated by local resident Ruth Thomas on behalf of the Hafod Action Group and Hafod Environmental Group.
Residents took their action following a decision by a Welsh Assembly Planning Inspector to give permission to dump around 250,000 tonnes of rubbish there each year over the next 25 years.. Local people said that smell, traffic and noise would be a major problem and have a deleterious impact on their lives.
Commenting on the decision, MARTYN JONES MP said:
“Ruth Thomas – who took the High Court - must be congratulated for her dogged determination in this fight. This is a great victory for local residents, whose lives would have transformed had this application gone ahead.
“The judge’s decision is important as it demonstrates that local people do have a voice in determining planning applications such as this."
The High Court gave the protestors a further success when they were awarded costs.
People in Johnstown want the site turned into a nature park and have raised around £16,000 to help their campaign.
