Tory AM Says “I’d Eat My Hat” – MP Offers Ketchup

Martyn Jones, MP for Clwyd South was today surprised to find an article recently published in a welsh newspaper in which a Tory AM accuses Labour of incompetence in regard to a recent gaffe committed by a Labour MP.

It was perhaps unsurprising that in a letter-writing campaign to obtain further support in his constituency, a letter found its way to Tory AM, Mr. Meldon - who was after-all, a constituent.

In a rather opportunist fashion, Mr. Meldon was quick to inform the local Media of this correspondence, making jokes at it’s content and exclaiming his ‘surprise’ at receiving it.

Unfortunately for Mr. Meldon such opportunism took a step too far when he decided to publicly state that he would “eat his hat” if the Tories committed a similar gaffe and sent campaigning literatures to Labour figures.

Not only did the Tories commit a similar gaffe, but the party leader, Michael Howard, actually sent a letter to Mr. Jones’ office in November asking him to donate £5000 to the Conservative election campaign!

Commenting on the story, Mr. Jones said:

“The Labour letter writing campaign referred to is a common constituency exercise citing the successful achievements of Labour’s term in office – it was of no surprise that a constituent of the MP in question received such correspondence.  Like most Tories, Mr. Meldon really ought to ratify his facts before he spouts such public rhetoric.  Not only are the Tories guilty of a similar mistake – their Leader has been contacting Labour MPs to beg for party donations! If he wants to eat his hat – I’ll kindly offer him some ketchup.”
