M1 NOISE BARRIERS ON THE WAY
Kelvin Hopkins MP for Luton North has received a progress report on the plan to build acoustic barriers on the M1 through Luton.
Kelvin Hopkins said: “I have this week received a progress report from the Highways Agency saying that a series of meetings have been held with local Councils to consult about the details for the proposed acoustic barriers along the M1 in Luton. Initially there was some uncertainty about the funding, but the report says “it would now appear that an allocation of funds has been made.... Likely to be in the order of £3 million in total”.
“Following consultations with local Council officers, the Highways Agency is now ready to consult with local people on their proposals. It has been suggested that Community Forum meetings in the wards through which the M1 runs would be held, and work would start on the Luton project early in 2002.
“I am delighted that the scheme is now making real progress and that this time next year we should see a start on the actual building work. I have been campaigning ever since I became a Parliamentary candidate in 1995 and have lobbied the Highways Agency and Government Ministers on the matter. I was very pleased when Roads Minister, Lord Whitty gave the go ahead last year. I hope the barriers will make a real difference to all those living close to the M1 in Luton and for nearby schools and workplaces too.”
