Recognition for PoWs

NEWS RELEASE - 13 November, 2000

RECOGNITION FOR WORLD WAR II PRISONERS OF THE JAPANESE

The Government has decided to give proper recognition to former prisoners held by the Japanese during the Second World War, and who suffered so much in fighting for our freedom. Some of these former prisoners are citizens of Luton and will now receive an ex gratia payment of £10,000 each, following legislation early in the New Year.

Kelvin Hopkins MP for Luton North said: “The former prisoners of the Japanese have finally received just recognition for their sufferings during the last world war. More than 50,000 British service personnel were captured by the Japanese and more than a quarter of these prisoners were either killed or died in captivity. Many civilians were also captured.

“I received representations from local Far East veterans and gave my full support to the British Legion campaign for some financial recognition for the suffering endured by members of the UK Armed Forces and UK civilians. I am delighted by this great victory on behalf of those who suffered so much in the Second World War struggle for our freedom and democracy. I am writing personally to those ex prisoners who were in touch with me to support their campaign.”

NOTE: The scheme is being administered by the War Pensions Agency which can be contacted on Freeline 0800 169 2277. Claim forms for ex Far Eastern POWs and Merchant Seamen or civilians, or for surviving spouses can be obtained by telephoning that number. Those qualifying will receive an ex gratia payment of £10,000 each.
