VAUXHALL CLOSURE ANNOUNCEMENT
Speaking today, Kelvin Hopkins MP for Luton North said: “The closure of the Luton Vauxhall plant announced this week is totally unacceptable. I am giving my wholehearted support to the campaign by the workforce and their trade unions to keep the plant open and to press General Motors to go ahead with the planned investment in a new model to replace the Vectra.
“Two and a half years ago, the trade unions, supported by the MPs. the local Council and with Government involvement persuaded General Motors to invest in the Luton Vauxhall plant and the workforce entered an unique pay agreement linking wage increases to a depreciation in the Sterling exchange rate. Luton is an efficient plant building quality cars, and the workforce have done everything they can to ensure the future of Vauxhall in the town. General Motors is trying to renege on all of this, and they must not be allowed to get away with it. I am keeping in close touch with the local trade unions to offer all the support I can to the campaign to save Luton Vauxhall.”
