Harry Potter’s Magic For Literacy

Weston-super-Mare MP John Penrose has described the enthusiasm of Weston’s Hogwarts’ fans as “magical for improving literacy” - as publication of the new book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows approaches.

John Penrose, who has a background in children’s education publishing, said:

“It’s brilliant to see so much enthusiasm for a book. Harry Potter’s even been described as one of the UK’s biggest cultural exports. Anything that promotes reading  and literacy should be cheered to the Hogwarts’ rafters.

“Across the country 7 million adults (24%) have difficulties with functional literacy (defined as "the ability to read, write and speak in English at a level necessary to function at work and in society in general.) In our South West region, that figure is marginally lower, but still too high at 22.4%.

“JK Rowlings’ Harry Potter novels really promote the sheer enjoyment of words and books. They’ve captured the public’s imagination. As more and more people realise that books are fun, that will be a magical boost for improving literacy rates.”

“In 2006 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was the most borrowed book from children’s libraries.  I have no doubt the final volume will keep them coming through the doors.

John Penrose added

“It’s been a long wait since Harry first appeared. Like so many other Potter fans, I’m eagerly waiting to get my hands on a copy of the new book. On Saturday we’ll finally learn the ultimate answer.  I can hardly wait.“
