John Penrose
Weston’s Unknowing Winners
Weston-super-Mare MP John Penrose is urging local residents to look deeper into their finances this week after research reveals that £59,147 is sitting in 160 forgotten bank and savings accounts across the constituency.
The dormant accounts are in bank and building societies that are now part of Halifax or Bank of Scotland.
Mr Penrose said:
“It’s amazing that these accounts have been forgotten. On average, each account holds £370, hardly an amount to be sniffed at!
“This is a big windfall for Weston. At a time when interest rates are high and mortgage repayments are stretching household budgets, extra cash will be a welcome break for many.
“But even if the funds aren’t that evenly balanced, no-one can really lose. Even if it’s only £10, that’s still a free copy of the new Harry Potter book!
“There could even be a huge goldmine just waiting for someone to claim it.
“Anyone who has had an account with Halifax, Bank of Scotland or a bank or building society that has become part of that brand should contact their local branch to find out if they’re one of the lucky ones. They should also check out www.halifax.co.uk/savings/dormancy/.”
