‘Breakfast Club is Key to Success’ says Weston MP
Local MP John Penrose helped out at Bournville Junior School’s Breakfast Club this morning serving breakfast to over 50 children.
The club, which starts at 8am every school day, is open to all children in the school and is funded by Bournville Junior, Community Infant and Wyvern schools Full-Service Extended Schools initiative (FSES). Each child pays a heavily subsidised price of 30p for a breakfast usually consisting of cereal, toast, tea and juice.
Before dishing up breakfast, Mr Penrose also took part with students in one of the other successful clubs at the school, 5-a-side football.
Talking after breakfast Mr Penrose said:
“The old saying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day is true, especially for children.
“Eating a healthy breakfast can make all the difference between a positive and productive day of learning and one where children can become disenchanted and uninvolved.
“A healthy breakfast boosts concentration levels, improves memory as well as improves children’s problem solving abilities. It’s also an essential part of a healthy lifestyle.
“Breakfast clubs like this one are having a real impact in schools as last year’s Ofsted report shows. Combined with clubs such as the 5-a-side football, it is no surprise that Ofsted found that the care of pupils at Bournville Junior is outstanding and students are confident, well behaved and have good attitudes to their work”.
