Local MP Supports Government Opposition of the Canadian Seal Hunt

Aberavon MP, Dr Hywel Francis, has supported the Labour Government’s opposition of the Canadian Seal Hunt. The Government is calling for an EU-wide on the commercial import of listed products of harp and hooded seals. The importation of certain products of ‘whitecoat’ pups of harp seals and ‘blueback’ pups of hooded seals has been prohibited in the UK and throughout the EU for around 20 years, and the Government is now calling for even tighter restrictions.

The Government is also concerned that if the hunt continues the Canadian Government should closely monitor it to ensure that no seals suffer improper treatment or are killed inhumanely.

Dr Francis said,

“I fully support the Government’s opposition of the Canadian Seal hunt and the call for tighter restrictions on seal skins and products entering the EU. I was very concerned about reports of cruelty during the hunt and it is vital that the hunt is monitored so that these brutalities are brought to an end and that all seals are treated humanely.”
