The constituency of Erith and Thamesmead was created in 1997 following boundary changes and results from the merging of parts of the former constituencies of Woolwich (in the London Borough of Greenwich) and Erith & Crayford (in the London Borough of Bexley).
Erith and Crayford was a Conservative marginal, with a majority of over 2000 in 1992. Woolwich had previously been a relatively safe Labour seat but was held by the SDP from 1984 until 1992. It was held by the SDP with a majority just under 2000 in 1987 and was won by John Austin for Labour in 1992 with a majority of 2339.
The constituency of Erith & Thamesmead comprises the Bexley local government wards of Erith, Belvedere, Thamesmead and parts of Colyers, Northumberland Heath and Lesnes Abbey; and the Greenwich local government wards of Abbey Wood, Thamesmead and parts of Plumstead and Glyndon.
