Jim secures Westminster debate on Coventry post office shake up
JIM Cunningham has secured a Westminster debate on changes to postal services in Coventry.
The Coventry South MP will raise the issue in Parliament between 12.30-1pm on Tuesday June 12.
Entitled Crown and Post Office closures and the relocation of Coventry Sorting Office, Mr Cunningham plans to raise a number of concerns raised to him by postal workers and customers.
Mr Cunningham is campaigning against moves to relocate both the city’s main sorting office to Northampton and the Hertford Street-based Crown post office to WH Smith.
Following the debate in Westminster Hall, a Government Minister will respond to the point raised by Mr Cunningham.
Mr Cunningham said today: “I’m pleased to have secured the Westminster Hall debate in order to again raise the issue surrounding postal services in Coventry.
“There is great fear among people in Coventry that the relocation of the Hertford street Crown Post Office to WH Smith will lead to a deterioration in the service.
“Also there is concern the relocation of the main sorting office to Northampton will also lead to a deterioration in the service and possible redundancies.
“I’ve raised these issues in the Commons before but this debate provides a good opportunity to have a detailed, in depth discussion on the issue and I look forward to hearing what the Minister has to say in response.”
Last month Mr Cunningham met with Post Office managing director Alan Cook to discuss the two proposals.
