CITY MP HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR INDUSTRY TO HELP TRAIN YOUNG PEOPLE
JIM Cunningham is pushing for more Coventry businesses to get involved in the new 14-19 diploma education programme. The Coventry South MP believes city firms, including the manufacturing sector, should play a big part in helping young people improve their skills.
Speaking after questioning Education Secretary Alan Johnson in the House of Commons of the issue, Mr Cunningham said: “The 14-19 diploma is a great move forward for education and the scheme offers real scope to get Coventry businesses involved in providing the skills the next generation of employees will need.
“The diplomas provide a mixed vocational and academic course which give young people a mix of theoretical and practical knowledge.
“This is something other countries have had for many years so I’m pleased we’re going down that road in this country.
“There are real benefits by Coventry firms, including those in the manufacturing sector, getting involved in the diploma programme.”
