This week we have returned to business as usual at the House of Commons and so I have spent my time getting on top of the issues of concern that have arisen over the summer break.
I am meeting with Department of Health Minister Rosie Winterton MP at the new Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital site in order to find out more about the progress being made in local healthcare provision and to view the state of the art facilities such as the Mental Health Unit and Clinical Sciences Building.
I met with the local Soroptimist Group, they raised various proposals in relation to the use of roads. I will be raising their ideas with the Minister for Transport this week. Another issue that I will be looking into as a response to constituent enquiries is the adoption of a new domestic measure of inflation, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) in place of the Retail Prices Index. The Chancellor states that adopting the HICP would provide a better quality target for domestic inflation in preparation for joining the euro, but I will be seeking reassurances that any new system will not result in detrimental changes for UK Pensioners.
Also I have met with the Coventry Branch of the British Pensioners & Trade Union Action Association to discuss the above price index changes and to find out how they see the alterations, in the rail services, provided to our area, affecting their members.
Continuing from pensions work earlier this year, I am in the process of arranging a follow up meeting between Rolls Royce and all MPs with a constituency interest so Rolls Royce can inform us of the latest developments within their pension scheme. I'll let you know how it turns out next time,
yours, Jim.
