Local MP Calls On Prime Minister to Bring In Laws On Airguns

In this week’s Prime Minister’s Question Time, local MP Jeff Ennis asked the Prime Minister to consider bringing in airgun controls in light of the recent tragic death of a two year old toddler Andrew Morton in Glasgow.

Jeff raised the matter after having discussions with Andrew Morton’s MP, Jimmy Wray the Member of Parliament for Glasgow Baillieston.

Mr. Ennis has been campaigning on this issue since calling an adjournment debate in the House on June 23rd 1999 on Airgun Safety, which he called as a direct consequence of local youngster Adam Yoxall from Grimethorpe being blinded in one eye.

Jeff said “I feel that in view of the recent death of Andrew that it is important that the Government now consider implementing some of the proposals I suggested in my adjournment debate.

The main proposal I would want the Government to look closely at is bringing in a licensing scheme so that anyone who doesn’t hold a license and uses an airgun will be subjected to severe fines or indeed imprisonment.

Jeff went on to say “There are currently over four million unlicensed weapons in this country which are potentially lethal especially to young children and it is time the Government took action on this matter.

Indeed it’s not just humans whose lives are endangered by the menace.  Over 10,000 cats are maimed or killed every year and many thousands of wild birds are also targeted.”

Jeff has been in preliminary discussion with the Home Secretary, Charles Clark MP and said he was very encouraged by Mr. Clarke’s incited response on this matter.
