Local MP Calls For the 25p Per Week Age Addition for the Over  the Over 80’s to be to be Significantly Increased by the Government.

Today local MP Jeff Ennis tabled a motion in the House for the Government to give consideration to either raising significantly the 25p age addition which a pensioner will receive when they’re over 80 years of age, or alternatively scrapping it.

The 25p per week has been added to pensioners over 80 since 1971 without any upgrading whatsoever.

Jeff Ennis said “In 1971 25p per week was worth something to a pensioner.  In those days 25p would buy a pound of cheddar cheese, but today it costs approximately it costs £2.60 to buy the same item and that is how much the 25p has been eroded in inflation terms since 1971..

Indeed you cannot afford now to buy a second class stamp for 25p.”

Jeff went on to say “There are more than 2.5 million  State Pensioners over the age of 80 in Great Britain and to increase the Winter Fuel Allowance  to £25 per year would cost the Government an additional £50 million per year and in my opinion it would be money well spent.

It would also have the added advantage of being switched from a weekly payment to not attracting taxation so pensioners would really feel the benefit of the addition £25 per year as opposed to the current £13 a year they currently receive, which could be subject to taxation.

I would hope that the Government will give serious future consideration to the proposal that I am putting forward.”
