Local MP Receives Cheque On Behalf of Former Miners

Jeff Ennis, Local MP for Barnsley East & Mexborough recently received a cheque from Energy Minister, Nigel Griffiths MP, which represents the amount of money that has so far been paid out to former miners in Barnsley East & Mexborough.
The cheque which represents a total of £78.9 million is the amount of money that has so been paid out to former miners in Jeff’s constituency.
Jeff commented “I am delighted that there have been so far almost 13,500 successful claims from former miners suffering from Chronic Bronchitis & Emphysema and Vibration White Finger in my constituency.
This is no more than the miners deserve and represents the highest number of successful claims for any constituency in the UK.”
Barnsley East & Mexborough currently ranks the second highest in claim totals just behind Easington Constituency in County Durham.
Other local constituencies ranked in the top twenty include Hemsworth which is ranked third with £68.7 million in claims, Doncaster North which is ranked tenth with £55.2 million, Don Valley which ranked fourteenth with £48.2 million, Barnsley Central ranked sixteenth with £48.0 million and Barnsley West & Penistone ranked twenty with £38.7 million in claims.
Jeff concluded by saying “These compensation schemes are the biggest in global history and are a credit to the Government and they are making a massive difference to the quality of former miners lives in this area.
I know there are many claims in this area still to be settled and I will continue to press the Government to make these outstanding payments as quickly as practicably possible.”
Altogether there have so far been 575,000 claims lodged for Chronic Bronchitis & Emphysema and 170,000 lodged for Vibration White Finger nationally and miners have so far been paid out more than £2.4 billion.
