MP Welcomes Internet Safety Proposal

Dr Hywel Francis MP for Aberavon has welcomed the Government’s publication of a review entitled ‘Safer Children in a Digital World’.

It is estimated that 99% of children aged 8-17 access the Internet. The Report, written by Dr Tanya Byron, was inspired by increasing concern over the safety of young people whilst using resources like the Internet and Video games.  It sets out several Recommendations, designed to help support and guide parents and enable them to help their children make the most of opportunities for learning and development, whilst protecting them from potential risks such as exposure to harmful material, or illegal websites.

It proposes a UK Council on Child Internet Safety, which aims to co-ordinate the two core elements of providing better regulation and better information, through research and expert advice in technology and child development and enforcement responses where necessary.

Dr Francis said,

“I feel that the Government’s publication of the Byron Report is a major positive step towards ensuring the safety of our young people whilst benefiting from new technology and internet resources. It allows safer opportunities for learning and development in which I strongly believe and will empower parents to safeguard their own children”
