If you are interested in any of the issues Helen has raised in Parliament, or you wish to raise any other matter of concern to you, please contact her office on 01925 232 480, or write to her at Gilbert Wakefield House, 67 Bewsey Street, Warrington, WA2 7JQ or email jonesh@parliament.uk. Details of her Parliamentary Questions and a full text of debates she has spoken in are available, along with the surgery dates for 2006.
In addition to the visits and events she attends in Warrington North, Helen Jones deals with hundreds of cases brought to her attention by constituents via letter, fax, email, and telephone, or in person at one of her many surgeries. Some of those issues have been taken up locally, but when needed, she has taken a number of issues to Parliament, either directly to Ministers or to the floor of the House of Commons.
Since being elected, Helen Jones has been very active in Parliament, making hundreds of contributions, either by speaking in the House or by verbal or written questions. In addition, she has instigated and supported a number of Early Day Motions including ones on the proposed postal code changes in Warrington, air weapons, trade justice campaign and asthma in schools. Helen has also served on many committees, which scrutinise proposed legislation.
In Parliament, Helen has a number of responsibilities. She has previously worked with Cabinet Minister Charles Clarke, where she helped to co-ordinate delivery of government policies across the North West region. Her particular areas of interest are health and education and she is now on the Select Committee of Education and Skills.
Helen is secretary of the Labour Party Committee for Home Affairs and is a member of the Department Committees for Education and Employment, Health and International Development.
Helen is the sponsor of the Christmas Day Trading Bill, which was introduced to try to ensure employees of large retail outlets are not forced to work on the 25th of December.

Helen has no outside business interest, believing that representing the 72, 000 plus people in Warrington North is a full time job.

Warrington Issues brought to Westminster
One of the most important jobs of a Member of Parliament is to ensure that local issues and concerns are brought to the House of Commons when necessary. During this parliamentary session Helen Jones has been able to raise issues of direct concern to Warrington people.
CAMPAIGNS TO HELP CARERS
Helen joined a number of celebrities including Fiona Phillips, Gloria Hunniford and David Jason, in supporting the national campaign to help improve conditions for carers who look after sick or disabled relatives or friends.
Lending her support to the 12th Annual Carers Week in June Helen tabled a Commons Motion recognising that many carers wish to work on top of providing care for their dependents. She is, therefore, calling on the government to abolish the ‘gainfully employed’ rule which prevents carers earning more than £84 per week whilst claiming carer’s allowance of £46.95 per week. One in 10 adults is a carer and the majority perform a hugely valuable role without any financial recognition. Many wish to work and need to do so to make ends meet. Abolishing the ‘gainfully employed’ rule will give carers a better chance of securing flexible and fulfilling jobs alongside their caring role as well as giving employers the flexibility that they need from their staff.
Helen met with members of the shopworkers union USDAW in Westminster to promote her Commons Motion and their campaign on this issue.

TRAINING FOR HEADS AND GOVERNORS
Last month MPs discussed the OFSTED report which found that schools were not keeping adequate records of the official checks on people working with our children. In the debate Helen Jones called upon the Secretary of State for Education Alan Johnson to make it a condition of appointment that head teachers and chair of governors attend recruitment training sessions. Currently it is not compulsory for head teacher or governors to complete the training. Mr Johnson agreed to consider her request.
Speaking after the Commons exchange Helen said: “It is important that we strike the right balance between doing what needs to be done and avoiding unnecessary panic. To that end, I don’t think compulsory safer recruitment training for heads and governors is too much to ask. Parents need to be confident that new recruits to our schools are properly vetted and adequate records are being kept.”
