Nottingham North is divided into nine wards: Aspley, Beechdale, Bilborough, Bulwell East, Bulwell West, Byron, Portland and Strelley. It has a higher number of older people compared with the other Nottingham Constituencies.

Graham Allen MP won the seat from the Conservatives in 1987 by a slim 1,645 majority. In 1992 it recorded the 5th biggest swing to Labour with a majority of 10,625. In 1997 Graham increased his majority to 18,801.

The constituency is 50 per cent owner-occupied and 50 per cent council property. It is largely a dormitory area with estates, little industry or inner city. Unemployment stands at around 4% for the City of Nottingham.

The election result in Nottingham North on 7 June 2001 saw me record the second largest Labour majority ever in the constituency. He said, "The result is a tribute to the work done by the Labour Government in its first term and above all, the incredibly hard work of Labour supporters locally.
