MP Supports Street Pastors Scheme
Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston and Surbiton, showed his support for Kingston’s new Street Pastors Scheme through tabling a Parliamentary motion.
The Street Pastors will be introduced to improve safety in Kingston Town Centre at night, as part of a joint project by Kingston United Reformed Church and Oxygen Christian Youth Project. They have already reduced street crime by 80 per cent in other areas where they have been introduced.
Edward Davey said:
“Kingston’s Street Pastors scheme is a great idea that has a proven track record in reducing street crime in other town centres in England.
“The pastors aim to provide a friendly and non-threatening presence that deters people from committing crime. They are also on-hand to help in case anything does happen.
“The scheme depends on the dedication of the Street Pastors and the support of the community. I am confident that it will be a success and give it my whole-hearted support.”
