Local MP Makes Chatter Matter
Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston and Surbiton, is leading the fight in the Commons to improve children’s communication skills as part of Make Chatter Matter Week.
Edward Davey has tabled a Parliamentary motion in praise of the Week, which started on 6th February and is run by the charity I CAN. One in ten children has a communication disability, meaning an average of three children in every primary school classroom struggle to understand others and express themselves.
Edward Davey said,
“Communication is a vital skill we need to foster early on in life. This week is all about highlighting the importance of fun and simple ways that families and other adults can use to help develop children’s communication skills.
“As part of this week, I was encouraged to choose my favourite word to help build a word wall. I chose the word ‘sleep’ because, it sounds great and is great!
“I simply believe in improving standards in reading and writing, but too often we forget the importance of talking and listening skills. If we forget to teach speaking and good oral skills, reading and writing suffers.”
