Davey Slams Government Over Student Debt
Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston and Surbiton, spoke out against unfair university fees at a student rally on March 1st.
The NUS lobbied Parliament to keep the cap on top-up fees. If the £3,000 cap is scrapped in the 2008 funding review, the NUS believe that spiraling fees will deter poorer students from going to university.
Edward Davey MP said,
“Ministers’ complacency about the impact of tuition and top-up fees must be alarming for students, future students and their parents.
“The truth is that getting saddled with thousands of pounds worth of debt won’t just discourage people from going to university but will change their choice of career, when they get married and when they can afford to buy a house. These are very serious issues and the idea that the Government is keen to lift the cap on fees without addressing them is extremely worrying.
“I also met with a representative from Kingston University and we both agreed that deciding to study for a degree should be based on someone's academic ability, not his or her capacity to manage debt.
“I will continue to lead the Liberal Democrat fight against top-up fees in Parliament and wherever I can.”
