An appeal to humanity

Davey meets with Tamil MP

Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston and Surbiton, met with a Tamil MP to discuss current developments in the Sri Lankan peace process and obstacles to progress on the post-tsunami reconstruction programmes.

Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, Member of Parliament (Sri Lanka) and representative of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) party that represents the conflict-affected Northern and Eastern Regions of Sri Lanka, is currently visiting the US and Europe to debrief interested government and opposition representatives on the issues affecting Sri Lanka, while providing the perspective of his party’s constituents who from a majority in the conflict-affected regions of the country.

Commenting on the meeting, Edward Davey said,

“It was an honour to meet with Mr Ponnambalam and talk to him about the terrible events that unfolded in Sri Lanka nearly a year ago.

“31,000 people in Sri Lanka died after last year’s catastrophic tsunami, along with 250,000 other people in the region.

“People in Sri Lanka and across the Borough are still reeling from the effects of the tragic events of last year. Many people gave generously at the time to help the recovery efforts. I consider it a priority to work for that too and help Sri Lanka get back on its feet as soon as possible.”
