At an event hosted today by Doug Naysmith, MP for Bristol North West, young researchers and engineers from across the UK presented their work in Parliament for the chance to win the £5000 BP Engineers Prize and the 2006 Gold Medal for Excellence in Engineering, donated by ExxonMobil.

Doug Naysmith is Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary and Scientific Committee which was established to promote interaction and understanding between scientists and engineers and Parliamentarians.  The annual competition was set up to encourage young engineers in UK university, industrial, public sector and other laboratories to present posters about their research work in engineering at Westminster and to compete for the Awards.
Doug Naysmith said: ‘I am delighted to be able to sponsor this event which encourages young engineers and promotes the role of science and engineering in Parliament.  I was especially pleased to see that Bristol provided so many high quality entries including the overall winner of both top prizes.’
This is the seventh year for this important, high profile annual Reception at the Houses of Parliament, organised by Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) for Europe, and again attracted a very good response proving very popular not only with early-stage research engineers but also with MPs and Peers, many of whom visited their constituents’ posters during the day.

This year seven of the participants came from Bristol (six of them from the Engineering Faculty at Bristol University) and were supported by local MPs Doug Naysmith and Stephen Williams.  Bristol University entrant, Dr Maciej Klemm, won both the £5,000 BP’s Engineers Prize and the 2006 Gold Medal for Excellence in Engineering for his work on Breast Cancer Detection using Ultra-Wideband Microwaves.
