DOUG NAYSMITH, MP for Bristol North West, joined others at a special event at the House of Commons to draw attention to the need to be aware of the levels of salt in our food. The event included a preview of the Food Standards Agency’s 10 second TV advert, to be aired from July 10th, which aims to encourage consumers to cut down on their salt intake.
The advertisement uses talking food packs to urge shoppers to always check labels on the food they buy to make sure they eat no more than 6 grams of salt per day (approx. 1 teaspoon). About 75 per cent of the salt we eat comes from processed food.
Doug Naysmith MP was photographed with the FSA’s spaghetti bolognese food packet character to draw attention to the FSA’s healthy eating message.
Representatives from the FSA, including it’s Chair, Dame Deirdre Hutton, encouraged MPs and Peers to check labels on the foods they buy to help them make healthier choices.
Doug Naysmith said “I welcome the work the FSA is doing to promote healthier food and raise awareness of the importance of reducing our salt intake. Eating too much salt can cause high blood pressure, which increases the risk of developing heart disease and stroke, so it’s important to check our food labels and reduce our salt intake.”
