Police should investigate TV phone-in fraud allegations – Foster
The Liberal Democrats have today called on the police to fully investigate allegations that television broadcasters misled viewers through the abuse of premium rate telephone services.
Commenting, Bath’s MP and Liberal Democrat Shadow Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, Don Foster said:
“In light of the most recent scandals involving ITV and previous cases involving the BBC and GMTV, the police must now decide whether there is a criminal case to answer.
“Many people are seriously concerned about the impact that these ongoing revelations are having on trust in the broadcasting industry. It increasingly looks like the only way we can put this issue to bed is with a full investigation into exactly what took place and who should be held to account.
“Ofcom has investigated breaches in the broadcasting code but it has not yet been established whether this is in fact a criminal matter.”
