As I promised in my last Diary entry I did arrange a meeting between representatives from Rolls Royce and MPs at Westminster, but in addition we also met with Union representatives for the staff from Rolls Royce factories. They brought to our attention a number of very important issues surrounding the Pensions Fund - I think all those involved found it a very constructive and enlightening meeting.
It has been a relatively quiet month in terms of lobbies etc, but this is sure to change after the 26th when the Queen's Speech sets out the business for the next Parliamentary year and the pace of legislation picks up again. However it has been a fairly busy time for me, I have received a couple of tours from different groups from Coventry, including some politics students and local townswomens guild group and I contributed to a debate on schools funding in the Chamber.
Geoffrey Robinson MP and I arranged a Westminster Hall debate regarding Walsgrave Hospital NHS Trust which was attended by the Health Minister Melanie Johnson. We raised the issue of the outstanding suspension of Dr Mattu and appealed for some Governmental action in order to bring this dispute to an end.
I have also met Lord Rooker from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister to appeal for more money for the Neighbourhood Wardens schemes and attended with Rt Hon John Prescott MP the opening of the new Poppy Court residence for older people in Coventry.
I shall also be attending a Presidents Lunch at the end of the week, with members of Coventry's Chamber of Commerce where they can raise with me issues of importance to small businesses in the Coventry area. I value these kinds of meetings as the insights they provide help me with my work at Westminster. Speak to you again soon,
yours, Jim.
