MP Keeps Cord Blood on the Westminster Agenda

David Burrowes is continuing to lead the charge in encouraging effective and ethical treatments for illnesses by promoting the donation of umbilical cord blood for public use.

Cord blood, which is routinely discarded at birth, can be used to cure over 70 diseases currently, yet David is aware that only 4 NHS hospitals in the country collect this valuable resource.

The MP for Enfield Southgate has tabled an early Day Motion to champion the work of the Anthony Nolan Trust charity and their commitment to encouraging the collection and storage of Umbilical Cord Blood.

David is challenging the Government to raise their thinking on this issue and commented:

“The Anthony Nolan Trust are doing a brilliant job and I hope that working in partnership with them and other Parliamentary colleagues who have signed my Early Day Motion, will ensure that essential debate on this subject is kept on the political agenda.”

He added: “I am looking forward to the Government’s response to the EDM and my Private Members’ Bill calling on them to take a lead in supporting the widening of umbilical cord blood collection.”

David’s Early Day Motion, which outlines the work of the Anthony Nolan Trust and their plan for national cord blood collection to be used in treatment and research, is numbered 969 if you wish to view it.
