Treharris Mini Rugby Prize Giving Evening
Treharris Mini Rugby Club recently held their prize giving evening and to help celebrate the evening the newly elected Mayor, Councillor Alan Jones, attended along with local Councillor Gareth Watkins. Giving out the prizes were Shaun Connor of the Ospreys and Adam Powell of the Cardiff Blues along with Club President Dai Havard MP who attended to present the Presidents award.
Many of the member of the club received prizes in recognition of their achievements and a special prize was awarded to Dowlais Rugby club for their assistance. The Presidents award is given to the club member who the club thinks has made an outstanding contribution and this year the award went to Des Jackson the club Treasurer.
The Treasurer is an important and often difficult position but Des has performed the role for more than 10 years. Steve Williams, the Chairman of the club said that choosing Des highlights all the hard work Des performs with diligence and integrity. He is an integral member of the board and often has a claming influence, especially on me. The club has a big turnover and Des manages to balance the books every year and without his help grant application, which the club relies upon, would be very difficult.
Commenting on the award Dai Havard MP said presenting my President’s Award at Treharris Mini Rugby is always a pleasure. I do not choose who receives the Award; that is a matter for the members of the club. This year it was an old school friend of mine Des Jackson. Des got the award for his work as the Treasurer who works magic! It is clubs like Treharris Mini Rugby and the dedicated effort of individuals like Des Jackson which help make a community and cement it together. Presentation night is mostly for the young players and their coaches and my congratulations go to them all. It is also for all those involved including all the parents and family members. Whilst it is a pleasure to see my President’s Award go to the individual the members have chosen, my thanks go to all involved, for they do more of value than just allowing young people to play rugby.
