MP Reminds Prime Minister on Iraq
Merthyr & Rhymney MP Dai Havard has written to the Prime Minister reminding him of the need for international not unilateral action on Iraq.
Dai Havard joined nine other Welsh Labour MP’s to send a joint letter saying; “If the UN weapons inspectors do find evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, or other evidence of the regime’s failure to comply with Resolution 1441, we do not believe that this, automatically, provides the justification to trigger military action. We urge that current diplomatic strategies through the UN Security Council be continued to achieve disarmament but, also, to avoid war that could be extremely costly in terms of human life and suffering, its impact on security in the Middle East and beyond, and in hardening the attitudes of many people in the Muslim world against the West.”
Dai Havard said; “There is no, ‘do nothing option’ but also no justification for ‘gung ho action. I drew my line in the sand in an Express article in September. I will support an ‘Internationalist’ response to the despots that run Iraq, but not a unilateral adventure with Bush. Our armed services have been risking their lives enforcing UN resolutions, in Iraq for the last ten years, protecting Iraqis against their own leaders. Saddam Hussein’s regime must be dealt with, but UN Resolutions have to apply to all, and Bush must do more to help sort out the Israel, Palestine conflict if there is to be long term peace.”
