Kennedy: PM must make clear whether attorney general gave full written legal opinion on war to cabinet: yes or no?
Charles Kennedy, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, today asked Tony Blair at Prime Minister’s Questions ‘on Iraq, can the Prime Minister take this opportunity to confirm to the House that when the Cabinet gave its final approval for the war in Iraq that the Cabinet, at that time, had before it a full written legal opinion from the Attorney General concluding that the war was legal. Yes or No?’
Mr Kennedy also asked the Prime Minister about the planned withdrawal of the 3000 Italian troops from Iraq. He asked Mr Blair ‘when Mr Berlusconi discussed this matter with the Prime Minister, did the Prime Minister seek to dissuade him from that course of action or persuade him into such course of action? And what implications does this have for a phased timetable of withdrawal of British troops from Iraq?’
