Biography
Born in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire in 1948.
Educated at Irvine Royal Academy and Kilmarnock Technical College.
Early Career:
- Started as an apprentice in Ailsa Shipyard (1965-70)
- Hunterston Nuclear Power Station (1970-77)
- ICI Organics Division as a draughtsman (1977-81)
- Nalgo District Officer (1981-92).
Political Career:
- Elected as Member for Cunninghame South 1992-2005, and for Central Ayrshire since 5 May 2005 general election.
- Convener of the Scottish Group of Labour M.P.'s from 1996-98.
- Member of the Select Committee on Transport until 2005
- Member of the House Administration Committee (2005 - present)
