·       Harrogate College, Yorkshire, 1964-73.

·       University of Edinburgh, 1973-77 (LL.B (Hons)).

·       University of Aarhus, Denmark, 1977-78 (autumn semesters, post-graduate studies in European Economic Law, in particular joint ventures).

·       Trained at the Scottish Bar 1980-82, admitted Faculty of Advocates, Edinburgh, June 1982.

·       Awarded Honorary Doctorate of Law by Anglia Polytechnic University in October 1997.
