GORGIE DALRY GAZETTE

Many Gorgie Dalry Gazette readers will have been pleased to hear the Climate Change Bill announced in the Queen’s Speech this month. I know from the many letters and emails I receive from constituents that the environment is an issue which concerns people.

The Climate Change Bill will enhance our efforts to tackle climate change.  It will make the UK the first country in the world to have a legally binding long term framework to cut CO2 emissions.  Together with the proposals in the Energy White Paper, and the forthcoming Energy Bill, the Climate Change Bill is part of a package of action to progress the UK’s transition to a low carbon economy.

This month sees the start of the new session in Parliament.

In workplaces, we’ll bring in further legislation to support families by extending the right to flexible working.  The Employment Bill will take new steps to protect vulnerable workers by increasing penalties for non-payment of the National Minimum Wage and crack down on abuses that can occur in the agency work sector.  And the Pensions Bill will place a duty on every employer to contribute to good quality workplace pensions for their employees.

And the challenges of terrorism and security, which were brought closer to home when we witnessed the attack on Glasgow Airport this summer will also be tackled.  The Counter-Terrorism Bill will ensure that police have the powers they need to protect the public against terrorism, whilst preserving essential rights and liberties.

Through continued prudent management of the economy we can continue to provide chances for people to make the most of themselves and their potential.  The second annual Child Trust Fund report has just been published and shows that over 3000 children in this constituency received £250 to start saving for their future.  And tax credits are helping 6 million families and 10 million children - I’ve written about them often due to the difference it makes to families and children. But  the Working Tax Credit is available to people without children if they are over 25, work more than 30 hours a week and earn less than £11,700 (or £16,300 as a couple).  Research  shows that most people with children who are entitled to tax credits know about them and are currently claiming, but there are many people without children who would welcome the extra money but aren’t aware of the help they could be getting.  Anyone who thinks they might be eligible should call 0845 302 1415 or get in contact with me if you would like my help.

This programme for change will continue to be built on the foundation of a strong and stable economy, with low inflation, sound public finances, high levels of employment, and interest rates kept as low as possible.
