CURRIE & BALERNO NEWS September 2007

I visited Harmeny School in Balerno recently who work with children from all over Scotland who have special educational needs.

I spent time with some of the children on their School Council who told me about the school, what they are learning and what they like to do.  I had just become Chancellor so one of their questions was “What’s it like to be the man who’s in charge of the money ” !  I told them, I suspected I might get the blame for a lot of things !

I was fortunate to attend the weekly childrens meeting to hear about the week’s events and to make the presentations to the children.  These recognise the achievements they’ve had during the week and wish success to those who are moving on from the school.

The school has been well designed to help the children to better learn and play and live in a normal home environment.  The extensive grounds are in a beautiful setting with plenty of space for outdoor activities. I was impressed by the enthusiasm of all the staff and by the friendly atmosphere at the school.

And I’m very encouraged by the strong relationship the school has with the communities of Balerno and Currie.  By joining local clubs such as the brownies and scouts their pupils have the same opportunities as other kids to learn life skills through making friends and having fun.  I know these links are highly valued and appreciated by Harmeny School.
