THE PEAK

I dropped into the Oxgangs Neighbourhood Centre recent ‘fun day’ to say hello to those that moved into the new houses and flats.

Priority was given to former tenants of the Oxgangs high rise flats and almost 60% returned.  I spoke to people who told me of the mixed emotions when the high rise flats were demolished.  Most had lived in the flats for a very long time with happy community memories however they all agreed the flats and buildings were in a poor condition.  The sense of community is one of the reasons why so many people like living here and chose to return.  I read the excellent pamphlet containing people’s memories stretching back 40 years.

But what is special about these new homes is that they’re all for affordable rent. Ten years ago people spoke to me about the problems of getting a job and a decent wage.  In the last five years, housing has become a much more important issue and many people are concerned about being able to afford to buy or rent a home.  There simply aren’t enough houses for the number of people setting up homes.  We need to do more.

Local people will remember that these new homes have been built after a long hard battle.  I want to acknowledge the work of the local residents’ associations, community groups and tenants who campaigned relentlessly for the regeneration of Oxgangs.  And to Iain Gray, MSP for the area until 2003 who highlighted the needs of Oxgangs and helped get the funding that was needed.

I want to see the completion of the next building phases and more new homes.  I’m sure those in their new homes this year will be enjoying an extra special celebration over the festive period.  I hope that next year many more will join them.

Finally, let me take this opportunity to wish all The Peak readers a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
