Biography

Born in 1948 in Liverpool to Reg and Marjorie, Alan moved to Nottingham to study and has lived and worked there for the past 30 years. After gaining a degree in economics from Trent Polytechnic Alan worked in the community on anti-vanalism projects before becoming a researcher for the Racial Equality Council.

Alan became a councillor in 1985 and was elected to serve as the Member of Parliament for Nottingham South in 1992. At the 1997 general election he increased his majority by over 10,000 votes. He serves on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee. He founded Labour Against The War to oppose military action in Afghanistan - he is a lifelong peace campaigner.

Alan was Green Futures 1999 Environmental Politician of the Year, and was shortlisted for Channel 4 Politician of the Year in 2003. He has written a number of books, pamphlets and articles on subjects as diverse as racism, housing, inner-city policing, employment, pensions and peace studies.
