Press Release

Consent application submitted for Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm

25th November 2005

npower renewables is delighted to announce that it has now submitted its consent applications to the Department of Trade & Industry and National Assembly for Wales to build and operate the Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm.

The submission follows 4 days of public exhibitions hosted locally by npower renewables in North Wales and Wirral, where almost 650 people took the opportunity to find out more about the Gwynt y Môr project. The wind farm has the potential to generate enough power every year to supply the average needs of 2% of UK households, whilst preventing the annual release of around 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide gas2 - equivalent to taking approximately 590,000 cars off the road.

Georgia Markwell, npower renewables' project manager for the Gwynt y Môr, said, "We are very pleased to be announcing this landmark moment in the development of this very significant renewable energy project.  As well as providing large amounts of clean energy and preventing the release of millions of tonnes of polluting carbon dioxide gas, it is estimated that the Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm would create some 120 new jobs during its operational life, the vast majority of which would be in the local area."

npower renewables has been providing information to, and consulting with local people and their representatives for over a year about the Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm, and will continue to communicate with communities in North Wales and the Wirral following submission of the consent applications.

The application for consent to build and operate the Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm is accompanied by the Environmental Statement3 which contains the findings of the Environmental Impact Assessment undertaken for the project.
