What your County Council Does

Your County Council has responsibility for many key local services. These include schools, social services, the fire service, roads, libraries and the museums service, trading standards, land use, transport planning and waste management.

Seventy elected councillors representing all parts of the county decide how these services should be managed. They are elected every four years (the next election is due in 2005). At present there are 24 Conservative councillors, 21 Liberal Democrats, 24 Labour and 1 Green.
