Don’t Look Back – a visual exhibition at the OU challenges perceptions of theatre
17 October 2005
The Open University celebrates a unique year long partnership with Brighton based theatre company, dreamthinkspeak, with the opening of an innovative exhibition in Walton Hall Library and Learning Resource Centre at the OU campus in Milton Keynes.
The exhibition, which has been created by dreamthinkspeak’s Artistic Director Tristan Sharps, has been specially designed for the OU. Using props, designs, film footage, sound and elements from Don’t Look Back, the company’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival sell-out production, it will create a visual and atmospheric experience.
The exhibition is custom created and designed in response to the architectural features, the stories and the echoes of the exhibition space at the Open University Library and Learning Resource Centre.
The exhibition will run from Thursday 20th October – Thursday 10th November.
Admission is free and visitors attending before Monday 24th October can enter into a free competition to win tickets for the Company’s final performances of their current production Underground in London.
Don’t Look Back is inspired by Orpheus and Eurydice, one of the greatest of all ancient myths and is about the perils of looking back. At the moment he turns his head to see Eurydice slipping back into The Underworld Orpheus is locked in a perpetual limbo – yearning for the past, aspiring to a future that will never be, unable to exist in the present.
Open University staff who recently saw the production in Edinburgh described it as “amazing”, “terrifying and creepy”, “stunning”, “beautiful” “emotional” and “atmospheric”.
Dr Maurice Hindle, Manager for the Faculty of Arts at the OU in London described the most recent dreamthinkspeak production as a “startling but absorbing experience”. “As one follows the various scenes acted out by the obsessed characters inhabiting these labyrinthine subterranean chambers, a grim and gripping story starts to emerge.”
Speaking about The Open University, Tristan Sharps, Artistic Director of dreamthinkspeak, said: “The partnership with The Open University has enabled us realise our artistic vision for 2005. We are proud to be working with a sponsor whose aims and objectives of making challenging work accessible to a wide range of people across the globe, are so close to our own”.
