Union Receives Second Commendation for ‘Reaching Out to New Communities’ Project

GMB Midland and East Coast Region, in partnership with Prospects Services Ltd, has won a second award for its innovative project, Reaching Out to New Communities.

The award was presented to the GMB at the Institute of Career Guidance National Career Awards, sponsored by the Independent Newspaper, and was one of only twelve top national awards presented at the ceremony. It was highly commended for its initiative in focusing on social inclusion. This is the second scoop for Reaching Out to New Communities - it was also recently presented with the Regional TUC Project of the Year Award 2005.

GMB Regional Organiser, Cheryl Pidgeon picked up the award on behalf of the GMB and said,

"The idea arose from joint working with the TUC, the Lincolnshire and Rutland LSC and Prospects Ltd in response to the increasing number of people coming to this region from Eastern Europe and Portugal. Whilst the main focus of the project is to enable migrant workers to learn English and thus learn about their rights, our Handbook contains practical advice about issues that most of us take for granted. The overall aim of the project is to help migrant workers to integrate more fully into their local community and to enable them to fulfill their potential."

The Handbook has been developed on behalf of the GMB by two young people who are themselves from Eastern Europe. They fully understand the issues that face people entering the UK seeking employment. The booklet is available in English, Polish and Lithuanian and it is intended to publish it in at least seven different languages initially.

Cheryl Pidgeon continued, "The booklet is starting to attract attention at a national level with the TUC and LSC - with other enquiries from the Polish Embassy and beyond! The Welcome Handbook as far as we know is unique and we are immensely proud of its success. It is a product that is much needed and could be reproduced as a tool for anyone coming into the UK.”
