ConstructionSkills links with Aimhigher to reach future graduates

ConstructionSkills, the Sector Skills Council for construction, has been working with Aimhigher, the government’s campaign to encourage more people into higher education to reach 10,000 potential university students.
The joint activity meant that information from ConstructionSkills about career options in the industry and the Inspire Scholarships on offer to undergraduates were shared during the Aimhigher Roadshow tour of 125 further education and sixth form colleges across England.
The activity was part of ConstructionSkills Positive Image campaign, which aims to improve perceptions of the industry amongst young people, and the 2006 Inspire Scholarships campaign. The scholarship programme is to help attract and recruit more high quality graduates into the construction industry, helping them financially through university, getting them work experience and ensuring they are job-ready.
Nicola Thompson, CITB-ConstructionSkills Director, said: “An increasing number of school-leavers are opting for construction degree courses. However, this trend needs to accelerate rapidly to meet the needs of the industry. The Inspire Scholarship is a unique sponsorship opportunity to encourage young people to consider a university degree in construction and the built environment.
The Inspire Scholarship programme offers:
- Up to £9,000 Grant during their university years
- A 10-week work placement with the sponsor employer in the summer
- Entrance to a competition in their second year that could net them another £4,000.
- The opportunity to leave university with a degree and almost no debt
- A good chance of a job with their placement employer
Student applications for 2006 Inspire Scholarships close on 30 May 2006. Employers interested in taking part in the programme should contact karen.patrick@citb.co.uk before 1 May 2006.
