National Construction College Presented with Ultimate Health and Safety Award

10 January 2006

National Construction College (NCC) East announced today that it has been awarded the highest health and safety accolade by the British Safety Council (BSC) – the Sword of Honour. The award was presented to NCC at a ceremony at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London on the 25th November 2005.

David Ballard, Chief Executive of BSC, officially presented the Sword of Honour to Bill McGonagle, Health and Safety officer at NCC. David Ballard said in his speech:

“On behalf of the BSC, I would like to congratulate you all on achieving this award. Your hard work and persistence has been recognised and you are now part of a small but distinguished group – among the safest companies in the world!”

NCC is one of only 40 organisations worldwide to be presented with the Sword of Honour, placing the college at the forefront of certified health and safety standards across all industries throughout the world.

David Boyden, director of National Construction College commented: “We are delighted to have received such a prestigious award, which underlines our commitment to providing the very highest of health and safety standards.

“We are particularly proud of the short timeframe in which we achieved this award, which is largely thanks to the commitment and dedication of our college staff and employees. We see this award as recognition of our high standards, especially health and safety – something we believe to be at the heart of a successful and sustainable construction industry.”

NCC set out to achieve this award just two and a half years ago and accomplished this ultimate health and safety accolade at its first attempt.

A message of congratulations was also sent by Tony Blair, The Prime Minister, who said: “These awards recognise the success of these organisations and their employees in their pursuit of excellence in the management of health, safety and environmental matters.”

The Sword of Honour is now in its twenty-sixth year and has been created to recognise organisations that have implemented the best safety systems in the world.  Earlier this year NCC achieved the BSC Five Star rating Health and Safety Audit – awarded only to organisations with exemplar health and safety standards, which made it eligible to apply for the highly sought after Sword of Honour award.

Lord Philip Hunt, Health and Safety Minister, was the guest speaker at the ceremony.

The application form for the award criteria covers key areas of safety activity such as safety organisation, management control systems and workplace implementation.  The auditor’s feedback from the assessment of the college identified a number of key strengths, including its ability to drive forward industry standards and promote best practice by demonstrating health and safety from the highest standards.

As the training division of CITB-ConstructionSkills, the National Construction College is the largest provider of construction training in the UK, offering both young apprentices and adult students a wide range of specialist courses.  The college’s East campus is one of five sites in the country, which, along with over 60 other locations, provides training for over 30,000 people per year.
